Every year, Your Investment Property magazine selects several investors with inspiring stories to celebrate their achievements. The annual Investor of the Year Awards aims to shine a light on those willing to be brave, bold, and tenacious in the face of a swiftly evolving property and finance environment.
There are three categories from which the judges select from. First is the Strategic Investor, someone who has been investing for some time and has developed sound strategies for more income and success with real estate.
The New Investor award celebrates the achievements of an investor who is relatively new to property and has been active for five years or less. Finally, there is the Reno Investor award for the investor who has used renovating to maximize their property profits. This award celebrates those who add a little “sweat equity” to their journey.
We’re also honored to announce that our very own Kevin Turner was chosen as one of the guest judges, thanks to his expertise and contributions in the field of real estate. When he was selling, he remained one of the top 10 salespeople in Queensland until 1991. Today, he produces valuable real estate content and insights available right here on the site.
Scott O’Neil was chosen as the Strategic Investor of 2019. A former engineer who took a risk in real estate despite doom and gloom predictions, Scott built his success on careful planning and risk management. The judges were impressed with the number of his properties and their values despite having only 8 years in the business.
Fate was at work on the day Holger Detje sat next to right person on a plane in 2014. On his way to the Philippines for a business trip, Holger picked up a property investment magazine on the flight. Luckily, the passenger beside him was an active property investor who encouraged him to try his luck. Less than two months later, he has around $800,000 worth of equity.
The judges chose him as the 2019 New Investor of the Year because they were impressed with his quick adaptation to the real estate industry and his large and highly diversified portfolio.
Cherylee and Colin Stokes, Reno Investors of the Year, developed their successful renovation strategy during their property investment journey that lasted nearly 20 years. The Stokes didn’t mind getting their hands dirty to maximize their net result, doing all the labor themselves and sourcing bargains along the way.
